We
bring our usual range of instruments, which we use to illustrate
the development of music from plainsong through the beginnings of
written music to the highly developed choral music of Renaissance
Europe. Special attention is given to the pavanne and galliarde,
along with the development of the madrigal.
The approach to composition is covered through explanation of modes,
drones, ground bass and other devices favoured by the early composers.
